bio
Now in his fifth season behind the bench at The St. James, Matt Billman currently serves as the Head Coach of the 19U AA Girls team. After joining the program for the 2021–2022 season, he spent his first four years leading the 16U AA Girls team, guiding the program to new competitive heights.
Over his four and a half seasons at The St. James, his teams have captured 10 tournament and league championships, including the 2025 AGHF League Playoff Championship, the 2022 Southeast District Championship, and the 2023 PVAHA Championship. Under his leadership, his 16U AA Girls have qualified for four consecutive USA Hockey National Championships, highlighted by a third-place finish in 2024 and a Quarterfinal appearance in 2025—the first National Championship Tournament ever hosted by The St. James. His 19U squad achieved the program’s highest-ever national ranking in September 2025, coming in at #12 in the USA Hockey Tier II Girls National Rankings.
Before joining The St. James, Billman began his coaching career at St. Mary’s Ryken College Preparatory School in 2016. During his tenure, he led the program to the 2019 WCAC Metro Division Championship and the 2019 MAPHL A Division Championship—both firsts in school history. His success and leadership earned him the 2018 WCAC Coach of the Year award.
From 2021 to 2023, he also served as an assistant coach at Bishop O’Connell High School, before joining the staff at The Landon School in 2024. At Landon, he helped the team capture the 2025 MAPHL AA Championship.
In addition to his team coaching, Billman provides private and group training sessions for elite players during the offseason at The St. James. His current and former students include athletes competing at top NCAA Division I programs such as Boston University, Yale, Boston College, Brown, RIT, and Syracuse, as well as Division III programs including Colby, Trinity, Wesleyan, Hamilton, and Marian. He also works with athletes at several premier New England Prep Schools, including St. Paul’s, Pomfret, Kent, Winchendon, and Westminster, as well as male players competing across 18U Tier I, ACHA D1/D2, NCAA D3, EHL, and NEPSAC levels.
Through his commitment to player development, competitive success, and a strong team culture, Billman has helped elevate The St. James girls program into one of the most respected in the country.
