Thai Nguyen

Thai Nguyen brings a wealth of experience, talent, and knowledge to St. James, shaped by his extensive journey in both playing and coaching volleyball. Having called Northern Virginia home for the past 30 years, he has dedicated over 25 years to the competitive volleyball scene, engaging in various formats such as USAV, grass, beach, and indoor tournaments. His deep-rooted passion for the sport has inspired Coach Thai to mentor many teams throughout his career.

As a coach, Thai Nguyen has built a reputation for fostering a team culture that values commitment, accountability, growth, and trust. His coaching philosophy creates an environment where student-athletes not only compete at high levels but also evolve into leaders and supportive teammates.

A shining example of his leadership is his 12U team, which made history in 2019 by qualifying for the Junior Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana, where they performed exceptionally well, finishing in the top 9% nationally and securing second place in the CHRVA region. The following year, under his guidance, this same team qualified for Nationals in the National Division before the season was cut short by Covid. In 2021, they continued to rise, achieving an impressive 29th-place finish and placing themselves among the top 8% at the National Championships.

In 2022, Coach Thai embraced the chance to lead the Boys 15 team, successfully steering them to a commendable 19th place finish in the competitive open division, further solidifying his reputation as a skilled and adaptable coach. By 2025, he strategically decided to return as the head coach for the 14 Navy Girls team, showcasing his unwavering commitment to developing young talent. Under his leadership, the girls’ team achieved the highest records in the club’s history, a testament to his effectiveness in nurturing excellence.

Currently, he is at the helm of Flint Hill High School’s Varsity girls’ team, where his leadership has driven the team to remarkable success. Under his guidance, they claimed the State Championship title in both 2023 and 2025. His exceptional coaching skills earned him accolades as Coach of the Year from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and for VISAA Division 1 in both 2023 and 2025. Additionally, he holds a CAP I certification, underscoring his commitment to ongoing professional development in coaching.
