Introduction to Swimming

Swimming Lessons for Children

The Learn to Swim program at The St. James offers the perfect introduction to swimming for beginners, blending water safety with fun in a small group setting. Now following the nationally recognized American Red Cross swim instruction model, our program emphasizes progressive skill development focused on lifesaving techniques—not just swim team prep.

With a low 4-to-1 swimmer-to-coach ratio and practices twice a week, each child receives personalized instruction in a supportive environment. Following the Red Cross framework allows young athletes to gain transferable skills that plug seamlessly into swim programs nationwide. It’s an ideal choice for families looking to build a strong swimming foundation rooted in safety, skill, and confidence. For many families, this is the start of a longer swim journey that begins with a child’s first swim experience and grows into stronger stroke fundamentals over time.

Level Up

Swim Groups

Our Learn to Swim program is structured in clearly defined levels based on the American Red Cross curriculum, helping swimmers develop core competencies one step at a time. Each level focuses on age-appropriate skill progression, allowing swimmers to master essential techniques—like floating, breath control, and stroke fundamentals—before moving on. This small group format is designed to support swimmers of different ages and abilities while keeping instruction clear, steady, and beginner-friendly.

Students advance to the next level whenever they’re ready, meaning they waste no time before working on the next set of skills. This allows the Learn to Swim program to work for a diverse range of students. This goal-driven program adapts to your swimmer so that they can learn to love the water.

Introduction to Water Skills: Students will learn basic survival skills in the water and gain confidence swimming short distances. This level is especially important for helping children feel more comfortable around the water from the very beginning.

Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills: Students will learn the basic stroke and skills: freestyle with rotary breathing and how to float and swim on their back. These early techniques give swimmers a foundation they can use in every lesson as they continue to develop control and coordination.

Introduction to Advanced Skills: Students will learn the basics of the more advanced strokes, specifically learning breaststroke kick, butterfly kick, and elementary backstroke. This level also helps young swimmers begin building rhythm, body awareness, and endurance.

Development of Advanced Skills: Students will learn the full advanced strokes of backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. As skills improve, lessons remain tailored to the swimmer’s current ability so progress continues at an appropriate pace.

Stroke Refinement: Students will refine their strokes and learn flip turns and surface dives. This stage supports swimmers who are ready to sharpen technique, improve efficiency, and prepare for more advanced training opportunities.
